Reading

It is our hope to build on the solid reading base that parents start at home and provide a strong foundation in reading that will last a lifetime. Our highest priorities are the development of both student’s ability to read and their love of reading. Mastering the three cueing systems meaning (semantic), phonics/visual (graphophonic), and language structure (syntactic) is just a part of reading. Children will need to understand that reading is purposeful and expect written messages to make sense.

Research shows that reading is a behavior.  In order to be successful, the behavior itself must be practiced with a purpose. We will foster this practice and make the act of reading a habit. We will provide a balance of reading experiences which include reading to , reading with, and reading by children. The daily teaching and learning activities used in the classroom will be:

  • Direct reading instruction according to students needs
  • Immersion in reading with daily opportunities to read and reflect on their reading
  • Reading, writing, listening, and speaking (These are intertwined because development in one area supports development in the others.)
  • Reading and comprehension taught throughout the day in all subject areas

In order for us to continue to be successful, we will need your help as well. Support our wonderful programs and volunteer your time. Our programs include: Take-Home Reading in grades K-3, and Junior Great Books in grades 1st & 6th. We need parents to help with shelving books in our book rooms.

Together we will share in the students’ delight in reading and highlight important points along the way. This stimulation will result in each student in Cherry Run becoming life-long readers and thinkers, which is the best gift of all that a school can provide.
