Fifth grade is a dynamic year for our students and their parents at Cherry Run. Fifth graders study language arts in their homerooms. The emphasis of reading instruction is placed heavily on extracting meaning from text. Students learn to communicate their thoughts through concise and descriptive writing. This is the first year students change classes much like they will in middle school. Students switch classes for math, social studies, and science. Ms. Ehlers teaches math and engages her students in problem solving and computation daily. Mrs. Butler launches students back through time as they study ancient cultures through the Renaissance in social studies. Mrs. Vickers strives to satisfy students’ natural curiosity through the study of science concepts and experimental design. Our goal is to take students from where they are and challenge them further.
Our learning extends beyond the classroom through various field trips and special days. To enhance the social studies curriculum we visit Wolf Trap for the International Children’s Festival and Agecroft Hall, a 16th century manor house. Field trips to the West Springfield Planetarium and the Science Museum in Richmond supplement the science curriculum. Math is brought to life as we travel to the National Cathedral for the “Got Gothic” program which highlights metric measurement. Other supplemental activities include Greek Day, London brass rubbings, Andrew Young, the knight, and much, much more… |
