Standards of Learning (SOL) Testing Information

Administered at the end of the course in late May (online) in World History I, World History II, U.S./Virginia History, U.S./Virginia Government, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry, Geosystems, English 11 (Writing and Reading).

Tests are required for graduation:
6 verified credits (passing course + end of course test) for standard diploma
2 English 11
1 Math
1 Social Studies
1 Science
1 Student Choice

9 verified credits for advanced diploma
2 English 11
2 Math
2 Social Studies
2 Science
1 Student Choice
• Opportunities during year and in summer school to retake any tests not passed.
• Sample tests available online for practice.
• English 11 administered in mid-March
• Passing score is 400; advanced proficiency is 500; perfect score is 600.


Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

  • Designed for students for whom English is not a native language and whose scores on the SAT I verbal would be affected by the language difference
  • Minimum acceptable scores established by individual colleges
    Currently TOEFL scores are not sent to FCPS high schools to become part of the student’s permanent record. Students are responsible for maintaining their own record of this test.
  • Students can register online at www.toefl.org or pick up form in Career Center (on-line registration preferred)
