Principal's May 2008 Message
Dear CES Families,
Last Friday our cafeteria was “The Place to Be” as so many of our Fortunate Fathers and their very darling Daughters danced the night away at our Annual Father Daughter Dance. The event was very special in the eyes of our girls and dads as some said they had awaited the evening for weeks in advance. Thank you to everyone who came, volunteered and played a role in making the event so anticipated by so many and so memorable for everyone.
As you may know, one of the major restructuring efforts to occur due to the bleak budget forecast is the redesign of summer school. Traditional summer school as we have known it in the past will no longer exist and in its place is the Early Intervention Program (E.I.P.). The E.I.P is a research based early intervention program which seeks to provide a “boost” to a smaller group of children for the coming grade level. Our program will run from July 28th through August 15th and will focus on rising 2nd and 3rd grade children for the coming school year. Invitations will be sent to children who are eligible in the early part of June. While this is a major system wide restructuring for our major summer program, it is one that is necessitated by the current economic conditions and one we anticipate will pay major dividends for the children it serves.
Other updates include:
The Learning Garden committee has met with Merrifield Garden Center and they have agreed to assist in our work. We appreciate those of you who have volunteered to help in our efforts to beautify our school and extend our learning outside! The garden plan is on display in the office.
The Preschool playground installation has begun and with good luck and good weather our children will be playing on it very soon. You can keep track of the progress though our bus lobby window.
If you have volunteered in any capacity in our school this year please come to the Volunteer Tea scheduled for Thursday, May 15th @ 10am in the Library. We appreciate every contribution of your time and know that it pays dividends in the lives of our children. Thank you again for supporting our children.
Even though September seems a long way away, thoughts of next year are beginning to percolate and we are beginning to think about and plan for next school year. We welcome your participation as we plan for class assignments. Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning abilities. You may consider sending a letter (or email) describing the type of classroom learning environment, teaching style, and include any specific information (learning style, child’s background, school history, etc) which you believe will assist us in creating the most successful learning environment for your child. Due to the many factors we must consider in creating the best possible classroom placement for everyone, requests for specific teachers cannot be honored. We will be working on tentative class groupings in June, with classroom assignments finalized in late August as the school year approaches.
Please send any letters or emails to me by June 1, 2008. Thank you for continuing to have trust in our school and in working together to create the most successful learning environment for your child(ren) at CES each year.
