Peer Mediation

To print out a mediation referral form, click here. Place the form in your counselor's mailbox and a mediation will be scheduled.

Peer Mediators are a group of fifth and sixth grade students who are trained to help students solve conflicts they are having with other students. Peer Mediators do not take sides or place blame on anyone. They listen to all participants and help students to develop their own solution to the conflict. Parents, teachers, or students can refer themselves to participate in a mediation. To participate in mediation, contact your school counselor.

How Does Mediation Work?
Mediations typically take place during lunch or recess time in the counselor's office. The students having the conflict, two mediators, and a school counselor are present for the mediation.

The mediation process has five parts:
  • Introduction and Ground Rules--Peer Mediators and participants are introduced. Ground rules are agreed upon (such as no interrupting, no name calling or put downs, tell the truth, agree to try to solve the problem).
  • Storytelling--All participants share their side of the story without interruption. Peer Mediators actively listen and help all participants feel understood.
  • Identifying Issues and Needs--Participants examine and define their own issues and needs.
  • Finding Solutions--Participants create their own solutions to resolve the conflict.
  • Final Agreement--Peer Mediators write solutions into an agreement and participants sign it.
Why Participate in Mediation?
  • It's confidential
  • Peer Mediators don't take sides
  • You can solve your problem peacefully
  • You decide on the outcome
