School Counselor Role

Karen Williams is the school counselor for Cedar Lane School and assists with the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. She works closely with Cedar Lane’s school psychologists, school social workers, ETR (employment transition representative), test coordinator, school administration, teachers, and other staff to determine the best individual plan for each student. School Counseling Program

Educational planning and course scheduling
Academic support and guidance
Individual meetings with students to discuss academic progress, course planning, and postsecondary options
Grade-level guidance units
Exploration of mainstreaming and FCPS Academy course opportunities
Sophomore and junior field trips to various FCPS Academies (career and technical programs)
Assistance with exploration of career paths and postsecondary training
Senior field trips to Northern Virginia Community College for placement testing and counseling
College guidance and application process
Junior/senior parent informational meetings

Consultation and Coordination Services

Collaboration with various school teams to discuss needs and planning for individual students
E-mail/phone correspondence and conferences with parents to discuss academic issues
Information sharing and student record analysis
Participation in IEP team meetings
Collaboration with teachers on strategies for increasing individual student success
Coordination with IEP teams, base schools, and other programs for partial mainstreaming options
Followup with other schools on progress and needs of partial mainstreaming students
Presentations to students from youth career services agency and field trip to agency site
Partnership with Project Discovery (college readiness and exploration program)
College representative visits to Cedar Lane
