August, 2011

Dear Students and Parents,

The Cedar Lane Community welcomes you to the 2011-2012 school year.  We look forward to meeting our incoming students and excited about seeing our returning upperclassmen. At Cedar Lane we see our school community as a family, the supportive nature and the acceptance of all students’ results in a positive and rewarding experience for all.  Can you believe it, we have less than 30 days before the school bell rings – mark your calendar for the first day of school, Tuesday, September 6, 2011. You don’t want to be late!

It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Ms. Doreen Dougherty as Assistant Principal of Cedar Lane School. Ms. Dougherty has served as a teacher and in administrative roles in Fairfax County Public Schools, (FCPS) for the past 6 years.  She began her career at Mount Vernon High School and joined the Cedar Lane family in August of 2009 as the Special Education Department Chair.  Ms. Dougherty is highly regarded in the educational community for her extensive knowledge in secondary instruction and special education. She is committed to the success of all students; she works tirelessly to support each and every young person who crosses her path. Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Ms. Doreen Dougherty in her new position.

The year ahead is full of promise and opportunity. We have been very busy this summer making revisions and developing new programs to ensure we provide the best instruction and support programs to help you become a self-sufficient and productive adult. We want to engage, activate and extend your knowledge. You will see new technology, textbooks, and initiatives.  We are excited about the leadership program and new classes we will offer this school year. We have dynamic teachers and staff to head these programs.

In keeping with FCPS electronic device policy, Cedar Lane will abide by the following: “All electronic devices will be turned off and out of sight as soon as you enter the school building and until dismissal at 1:50 p.m.”  The same policy will be in effect during your   lunch period (the cafeteria and designated outside areas.)  Please see the Students Rights and Responsibilities booklet, Regulation 2601.25P to define the violation and the disciplinary action.

Included in this mailing is additional information and documents to help ensure a smooth transition from summer into the academic year.  The documents are as follows:

  • Student /Parent Handbook - Please take the time to read the contents of the handbook.  As a student you are responsible for knowing the school policies, if you need clarification, please do not hesitate to speak with your homeroom teacher.
  • SR& R - Parents please review this document with your child and return the “Parent or Guardian Signature Sheet” no later than September 13, 2011.
  • Emergency Care Information
  • Health Information
  • Student Accident Insurance
  •  FCPS 2011-2012 Handbook
  • 2011-12 Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms
  • School Supply List

Parents - we invite you to partner with us to ensure your child has the best high school experience ever.  We know sometimes this will require you to take an active role and at other times to remain in the background and serve as a support system if needed.  Parenting a teenager is a tough balancing act; it is sometimes difficult to know when to hold on and when to let go.  Cedar Lane has experienced staff that have worked with adolescents for an average of 20 years, and is a great resource to support and guide you in the parenting process.  Please remember each student at Cedar Lane is assigned a clinician to support him or her.

On behalf of the Cedar Lane Staff, we extend to you our best wishes for a successful school year.

Sincerely yours,

Brenda Baldwin-Marshall                      Doreen Dougherty
