Third Grade is an exciting year of learning! A priority in Third Grade is that students master the concepts and skills of the Program of Studies (POS) and Standards of Learning (SOL) in preparation for the Virginia State testing of K-3 content in reading, math, science and social studies. In reading, students are developing skills to become proficient readers, with a focus on decoding, comprehension, and fluency. The writing outcomes in third grade are that students have mastered paragraph writing.
A new FCPS math pacing guide is setting the stage for students to focus on patterns, developing number sense, and problem solving. These three common themes will spiral down to all strands of math including: fractions/decimals, measurement, geometry, probability and much more! Students enjoy being inquirers in social studies and science. Students get to travel to the past as we study ancient cultures as well as behave as scientists observing, recording, and collecting data on a variety of topics including our new unit Making Work Easier: Simple and Compound Machines!
