The
Cued Speech Program at Canterbury Woods Elementary School serves
children who are deaf or hard of hearing from infancy through grade six. Services may be provided in the home until the child
reaches two years of age, at which time he/she may attend the
preschool at Canterbury Woods. After sixth grade, the Cued Speech
Program continues at Frost Middle School and Woodson High School.
The ultimate success of the Canterbury
Woods Cued Speech Program is dependent upon the active involvement
of parents in partnership with school staff.
Participation
in inclusion classrooms
is emphasized as part of a language based curriculum,
with integrated services provided
by teachers, instructional assistants, transliterators, speech/language
clinicians, an audiologist, a social worker, and administrators,
with an
emphasis on language development, reading, writing, and speaking
skills (appropriate to the personal communication goals of
the parents).
Each child receives an individualized
program that addresses social, emotional, physical, and academic
needs. These needs are met through a range of options. Teachers
and professional staff trained and experienced in working with
children who are deaf or hard of hearing provide individual
services in the inclusion classroom with small group instruction
when needed. |
