Thomas Jefferson


        Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in Goochland ,Virginia. His mother was Jane Randolph Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson lived from 1743-1826.Thomas began his studies under a tutor. At age 9, he went to live with a Scottish clergyman, who taught him Latin, Greek, and French. After his Father died, Thomas entered the school of James Maury,  an Anglican clergyman, near Charlottsville. In 1760, when he was 16, he attended the College of William and Mary.
        Jefferson was red haired and very intelligent. He was one of the leading architects of his time. He designed the Virginia Capitol, the University of Virginia and his own home, Monticello. He was the 3rd President of the United States from 1801-1809. He died a happy man. On his gravestone he wrote

Here was buiried Thomas Jefferson,
Author of the Decleration of Independence,
of the Statuate of Religious Freedom,
and father of the University of Virginia.



        He was 83 years old when he died on July 4, 1826. He was a great inventor and invented the elevator, the disappearing bed, the dumb waiter and many more cool mechanisms. Here is a brief list of important dates in Thomas Jefferson's life.

1772    (Jan. 1) He married Martha Wayles Skelton.
1776    Wrote the Declaration of Independence.
1779    Elected Governor of Virginia.
1782    Mrs. Martha Jefferson died.
1785    Apointed minister to France.
1789    Became United States Secretary of State.
1796    Elected Vice President of the US.
1801    (Feb. 17) Elected President of the United States.
1819    Founded the University of Virginia.
1826    (July 4) Died in Monticello, his Virginia home.
