Shenandoah Valley
The Shenandoah Valley is the bottom of a huge lake
that was drained. The valley is 30 miles (48 km) wide. It is
the largest valley in Virginia. The valley is divided by a short granite
mountain called the Massanutten. Shenandoah is the Native american
word for "daughter of the stars". Of all the valleys in Virginia
the Shenandoah Valley is the largest. During the Civil War the valley
was full of fighting. After a Confederate victory at Second Winchester
the valley was cleared of Union troops. In all there were 15 Civil
War battles in the valley. Of them all Opequon also known as Third Winchester
and Cedar Creek stood out the most. Cedar Creek took place on October
19, 1864 and Opequon took place on September 19, 1864.
