James Madison

Born on March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia, he was the fourth president of the United States.  Madison played a large role in the writing of the Constitution, so he is known as the Father of the Constitution.
James Madison served as the Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson.  When he was the president, he led the United States into another war against Great Britain.  This was the War of 1812.
Madison was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, so they did many things together.  He worked very well with Jefferson and they helped to fight against the idea of a bank that would give the federal government more power.  They succeeded in this.  That shows how much he believed that the citizens should have just as much power as the government.  James Madison died on the morning of June 28, 1836.
