George Washington
An extremely
famous man, George Washington did some very important things. He
led the colonists to victory twice, first in the French and Indian war,
and last during the American Revolution. He was the first president
of the United States, serving for two terms, and his face is on the
one dollar bill. He did not live in Mount Vernon his whole life.
He was born at Ferry Farm, a money-making plantation. He had a mother,
a father, and a sister. His mother died, and father married another
woman who had a son named Lawrence. When George was older, his father
died. Then he and his family moved to Mount Vernon, which was in the property
of his mother.
When his mother died, Lawrence inherited Mount Vernon but
he got tuberculosis. The doctor advised a warmer climate, so Lawrence
and George went to the West Indies. This did not help. Not only did Lawrence
die but George caught smallpox, giving him permanent pockmarks on his face.
The disease made George immune to many other diseases. George's sister
inherited Mount Vernon, and shortly after, George inherited it.
George married Martha Custis and they had two children. Their names
were John (Jackie), and Martha (Patsy). Patsy died of epilepsy at
eleven, and Jackie died in 1781 the year we won the Revolutionary war.
George and Martha took in Jackie's children.
