A plateau is a flat-topped tableland with steep sides. Its elevation is usually 2,000 feet or 600 meters. Along the edges, a plateau gives way to hills and mountains.When plateaus wear away, they become buttes or mesas. As rivers flow though plateaus, they slowly wear away its sides. Weather like rain can also wear away plateaus.
