I do not know when Sitting Bull was born so I will tell you about his life from age 45 to 80.When he was young his name was slow then he went to raid other tribes with the Sioux and he raided the Crow Indians and earned his name Sitting Bull. When he was a man he married Scarlet Women who had a son; but that winter was very cold and they both died. He joined a warrior society; they chose him to be the sash wearer. In war he wore a red cloth staked to the ground with a lance. He was not allowed to move until the battle was over. One day he was hunting, the Crows entered his Camp called Hunkpapa. When he returned he organized a pursuit. They soon caught up with the Crows. Sitting Bull saw the man who killed his father. The crow shot an arrow hitting him in the foot. Because of this arrow he had a limp for the rest of his life. In 1867 Sioux gathered at Standing Rock for a ceremony. For the first time ever they chose a chief to lead all Sioux. They chose Sitting Bull for their chief! He received a bow and 10 arrows, white horse, and flintlock gun. Then the tribes crowned him with a war bonnet with eagle feathers that draped to the ground. Sitting Bull died in 1890. |
