Jackie Robinson was born in 1919. He is known as the first African American Major League Baseball player. That is not all his life was about. He was drafted into army and attended UCLA. He was a great athlete in college and so were his older brothers. He grew up during segregation; which is the reason he is famous for playing baseball at this time. Jackie was treated unfairly by whites because of the color of his skin. The Brooklyn Dodgers owner was looking for a great player, and when he saw Jackie he did not care that he was black. Jackie tried out and made the team. The other players did not like him. Jackie ignored their insults and played. He wanted to prove whites were not better than blacks. Several people threatened him and his family. He ignored the threats and proved that blacks could play in the Major Leagues. Jackie Robinson died in 1973. He was known for giving other blacks the courage to play Major League Baseball. |
