Johnny Appleseed

Johnny Appleseed was a very important person. His real name was Johnny Chapman. He was born in September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts. He loved watching the trees grow near an orchard. He often wondered off into the wood. The animals trusted him because he was very kind. As soon as he was old enough to leave home, he would go to the woods and plant lots of apple trees. He carried a small bag of apple seeds, a shovel, and an axe. He traveled long distances and met Indians and made friends. After a few years the winter slowed him down just a bit but he survived by a diet of butternuts. When it was spring he met a band of men. They were amazed that Appleseed would not hurt an animal and didn't use a gun. They challenged him to a wrestling match but he chose a different match, wood chopping. After that Appleseed obviously won. John planted more apple trees and other people loved buying plants from him. He would often help lots of his neighbors. After a while Johnny remembered the faces of the children he told stories to. When he got old it was harder for him to enjoy nature and plant seeds. In March 1845 a snow storm hit and he became ill for the fist time, he died 1845. Johnny Appleseed made a big difference.
