The New England economy was based on their natural resources from the forests and oceans. Ship building industry used the lumber from the forests. Fishing and whaling were the biggest parts of the economy in New England. They used the whale blubber to make oil. This oil burned three times as long as three candles and smelled better. An important port city was Newport. This was a major port city to sell slaves. In Newport they also had craftsman and shopkeepers. Another important port was the Boston Harbor. The imports and exports were also important. Some imports were manufactured goods, cloth, buttons, shoes, and tea. Things that were exported to England were lumber, ships, and dried fish. The New England Colony succeeded because of their economy. |
