Pennsylvania

By: Erin

Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, the leader of the Quakers. William Penn founded Pennsylvania in 1630 for religious freedom. The King gave a charter to him in 1681. The charter was called a proprietary charter.

Pennsylvania means "Penn's Woods". Penn is William's last name. The King was in debt with William's father so the King gave land to Penn and named it after him. When Penn arrived and saw it had many trees, he named it Pennsylvania. The word, "sylvania" means woods.

The Quakers were a group of people who believe all people are basically good. They believed in no violence and would not fight or carry guns. They also believed in peace. This belief put them in jail a lot, because the Quakers refused to serve in King's army.
