Georgia was the most southern colony. It is surrounded by present day Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, and the Atlantic Ocean. Georgia was found by James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe was a general and law maker. He brought 19 partners with him to settle the colony. King George II gave him a charter. It was a proprietary charter, which meant the king gave an individual land in order to settle a colony. The charter only allowed them to be there for 21 years. In the 1700's, most debtors in England were hung and imprisoned because they did not pay back money to the king. Oglethorpe gave a second chance to those debtors. Coming to the Americas gave debtors a new chance at life. He also invited people of all religions to live in Georgia, not only one. It was because of these reasons he was a humanitarian. |
