Roanoke Island was in North Carolina. It was settled by the English. They came from England. In 1584 Queen Elizabeth I told Sir Walter Raleigh to start a colony in the new world. Sir Walter Raleigh sent 100 colonists to start a new colony. John White was their Governor. John White went back to England to bring in more supplies to the people in Roanoke Island. When he came back the settlers were gone. When they looked everywhere they saw a tree with "C R O" written on it and they also saw the word "Croatoan" written on a post. No one knows what happened to the settlers. Some people think that the settlers went to live with the Croatoan Indians, but it is still a mystery today. |
