Jamestown was the first permanent colony in the New World founded in 1607. It was located in the east of the Appalachian Mountains near the James River in what is now known as Virginia. The people who found and started it were the merchants and the king. The king of England gave a charter to the Virginia Company. The king gave them a charter to settle the colony. The settlers had a hard time in Jamestown. It was damp and swampy with lots of bugs. They couldn't drink the water because it was bad. They didn't know how to farm so they ran out of food. They didn't know how to build shelter. The first winter was the "Starving Time." Then John Smith said everyone had to work or they would have no food. Things got better after that. The colonists learned how to grow tobacco from them the Pohowtan Indians. Tobacco became a cash crop and was sold to Europe. Later in 1619 women and Africans came to Jamestown and helped make it a successful settlement. |
