The Plymouth Colony was settled in New England. The settlers were from England and half of them were Puritans. The ship that sailed to Plymouth was called the Mayflower. There were 101 people on the Mayflower ship. The people settled the Plymouth Colony on December 25, 1620. These settlers came to start a new colony because they had no religious freedom. In England, it was against the law to leave the Church of England. These settlers wanted to practice religion differently. Some of them went to Holland but they still wanted to keep their English culture. John Smith was the leader of the settlers. He was the one who named the place, Plymouth. The first winter was really hard for a lot of the settlers. People got really ill during the winter. During the first winter some of the settlers died. When they arrived at Plymouth they were low on food at first. They would fish so they had some food to last longer. |
