The zodiac is the Chinese calendar. It has twelve animals that represent the different years.  The zodiac lasts for twelve years then it starts over again.  Thirteen animals had a race and the first twelve animals that crossed the finish line got a year.  The rat was the first to cross the finish line making him the first year.  This is  the history of the zodiac calendar.
