By: Rebecca Back in the Middle Ages you couldn't just go to Mickey D's and pick up some fries. You had to make your own food! It must have been incredibly tough.Especially those who where poor, they had no food or money! If you where rich, you had an elegant feast. Another part of back then was you would have no fridge, so you had to preserve your food various ways. Also you ate a humongous amount of bread. You ate it at every meal, but back then it wouldn't be a big shock because the main crops they grew where all grains. So far, to me being rich in the Medieval Times doesn't sound too bad food wise at least. Here is another down side of this time, everyday you had basically the same meals and everyday the wife or chef would slave over the hot stove making almost the same thing over again everyday. For breakfast they ate fresh baked bread that you would eat from 6-7 in the morning, but in the palace you had bread, but you also had many more courses and dishes too. Lunch would typically be a stew with any animal caught that day or the day before, like rabbit, fish, quail, pig, boar, or blackbird and veggies like beans and peas. Like breakfast, the royal family had many more courses, and choices. It was served from 12-2. Dinner frequently was the leftovers from lunch, or in the palace, a fabulous feast followed by entertainment served from 6-7 in the evening. But you can't forget that at every meal that bread was served. Speaking of bread and wheat the spring crops where legumes, a type of bean, oats, and barley. The winter crop was wheat to make bread and ale. Don't forget that thanks to no refrigeration they only ate crops in season. So how does living in the Middle Ages sound now? Like all times they also traded food and livestock, like salt, cows, oxen, horses, and pigs. Speaking of livestock you probably want to know who bought what meat and what they did after buying it. As you can see food was a lot different for the poor and rich, including with meat. The rich ate game, venison, beef, and mutton frequently, but ate pork veal and poultry less regularly. The poor ate anything they got though. After they bought the meat they salted it to preserve it, because that was the only way to keep it fresh and edible. As you can see the cuisine was massively diverse from now. Whether you are taking a time machine back to the Middle Ages or are making an authentic Middle Ages dinner for your family now you know what to eat or make. Back then even though food wasn't as convenient as the present time it was just as delicious as now. |
