MEDIEVAL Attire

Medieval style is something to be desired. Men and woman didn't have the best sense on style, but some people did. Ladies, lords, kings, peasants, monks and nuns all had different clothing that matched their life style.

Ladies in the Early Middle Ages (900-1000) wore very tight dresses to show their elegance. Some wore very long dresses that would sometimes cover the whole neck. All dresses that they wore consisted of two tunics and a veil over the head. Ladies in the 1100-1200's which were in the middle of the Middle Ages wore a cap made of fine linen. They still wore tight dresses like in the Early Middle Ages. They wore colored bands around their shoes to show the shape of their foot, they additionally wore long cloaks and closed shoes. Later in the Middle Ages during the 1400-1500's woman wore long trains in their dresses. Their sleeves were beautifully embodied. Ladies wore large headdresses that were rolls. Many wore stunning necklaces around had their necks.

Lords and Kings had a whole different closet full of clothes. They both wore exactly the same thing all through the Middle Ages. During the Early Middle Ages their clothing was influenced by the classical style of the Romans. All the clothes they wore were loose and belted. Near the 1100-1200's they started wearing surcoats that added to what they were already wearing. During the 1400-1500's short robes, lashed sleeves and shoes that had metal points on the heel for protection came into fashion. The robes of Kings and Lords were trimmed with a fur called sable.

Ladies, Lords and Kings all wore beautiful robes made from silk and linen. Their robes were long and loose. The robes were bright with colors such as scarlet, blue and green. During the winter they wore cloaks lined with fur. To decorate themselves they put on elegant gold brooches and rings.

Peasants during the Middle Ages had an entirely different closet. Their clothing was plain and simple. They wore a blouse of cloth or skin that was fastened by a leather belt. Peasants wore an overcoat made of thick wool. They wore short woolen trousers and boots or shoes. This was a man's closet. A woman's closet wasn't to different. Woman wore long loose dresses. They wore hairnets and plain slippers on their feet. Rich people and poor people all had a different sense of style.

Monks and nuns wore different, but similar garments. Monks wore a tunic tied around the waist, a scapula ( piece of woolen cloth) over the tunic and some wore a cross around their neck. Nuns dressed in a habit tied around the waist, a scapula worn over the tunic, a wimple and veil was attached to the scapula and some of them wore a cross.

As you can see everybody during the Middle Ages wore a different garment that showed everybody who they are, what they did, and how they act.
