The elementary school counseling program is designed to support and complement the efforts of the classroom teacher to facilitate learning.

 

The role of the counselor is varied and includes:

  • Counsel individual students
  • Conduct small groups
  • Consult with teachers, parents, and other professionals
  • Teach monthly guidance lessons
  • Teach parenting education classes
  • Help students and teachers in crisis situations

Students are referred to the counselor by:

  • Student request
  • Parent request
  • Teacher or administrator request

Classroom guidance lessons occur on a regular basis and support the school's Character Education Program. Character traits that will be highlighted this year include:

  • Responsibility
  • Respect
  • Fairness
  • Caring
  • Trustworthiness
  • Citizenship

Small group counseling sessions are offered each semester. Notices to inform parents are sent home prior to group participation. Each group meets for 30 minutes once a week during the school day for approximately six to eight weeks. Group counseling topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Study Skills/School Success
  • Changing families
  • Anger management
  • Grief
  • Self-esteem
  • ADHD
  • Assertive training
  • Friendship/social skills
