I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and update you on some “art news”. My name is Miss Brockhuis and I am new this year to Cameron Elementary. I received my BA in art education from Bowling Green University and my masters in educational leadership from Wright State University . I have previously taught art in Ohio and in Prince William County in Virginia . This will be my eighth year teaching art. This year we will be rolling out the red carpet and having a Hollywood theme art show on May 27 th . We will be doing many exciting projects to compliment our theme. We will also look at and talk about major works/styles of art, as well as create our own masterpieces using various art techniques. In order to provide the best possible learning environment for your budding artist(s), we will be discussing our guidelines for behavior the first day of class. I feel that it is important for you to know that my approach to classroom management is proactive. I reinforce positive behavior with the “Gold Paintbrush Award.” After a certain number of paintbrushes are earned the class receives a “Free Art Day.” Any donation of old craft supplies, play dough, stickers, pipe cleaners, beads, etc. would help us to provide this wonderful incentive. I also believe that by putting attention on students' positive qualities, keeping the lessons interesting and experience oriented, the art room will be a dynamic creative environment for the students to explore the artistic process. In addition one table a month will serve as the “helper table”. Our art program is challenging, exciting, and beneficial for students. I will introduce your young artist to many new techniques, experiences and materials. Efforts will be made to correlate art lessons with academic core curriculum. I expect hardworking, interested students with positive attitudes. As in any academic area, your child will receive a grade for each marking period. Each project that we complete will have specific criteria that will be evaluated. I base my grades on following directions, craftsmanship and originality. In addition to an achievement grade students also receive a grade for effort. Click here to download this entire document.
