Camelot Center
Home School Partnership
2008-2009

Our Statement of Beliefs

We, the families and staff of Camelot Center, recognize that the family is the most critical influence in a child's life, and therefore, a strong and active partnership between home and school is necessary to achieve the high expectations we have for our students. We create this partnership between home and school based on our commitment to the auditory/oral approach in educating students who are deaf and hard of hearing. We will focus on the development of listening skills and spoken language, and on the development of academic and social-emotional skills. These skills will lead our students toward full inclusion n their school and home communities. Our partnership, which is grounded in mutual respect, understanding and trust, is dependent on open and on-going communication between home and school.

To support our shared beliefs, we commit ourselves to the following:

School

Send children to school with the materials they need for the school day.

Communicate to parents what is needed for success at school. Adapt the curriculum to the goals of each child's IEP.

Expect children to use amplification consistently and make sure it is working properly.   Monitor students' amplification throughout the school day.

Provide children a variety of listening opportunities and a quiet area for homework and reading.   Make sure children can hear as clearly as possible by providing appropriate listening conditions and assistive listening devices.

Take children for regular ENT and audiological test appointments.

Check ears for wax, fluid or other ear complaints. Review and discuss audiology tests and other issues with parents.

Encourage child to use spoken language in family conversations and leisure activities.   Practice spoken language skills throughout the school day.

Make literacy a part of every child's life – read regularly to and with your child.   Focus on literacy skills in all subject areas.

Establish clear guidelines for behavior at home.

Establish clear guidelines for behavior in the classrooms playgrounds and cafeteria.

Request information and support from school relating to social/emotional student needs.   Provide support and resources to families.

Provide opportunities for children to socialize and participate in activities in the community.   Provide inclusive opportunities at Camelot Elementary School.

Communicate to teachers and administration any information relevant to child's needs.   Be available to discuss child's needs and parent concerns whenever necessary.

Be informed about the education of deaf or hard of hearing students and the latest developments in technology.   Present parent education sessions and provide information on best practices in education of deaf and hard of hearing students and new technological advances.
