General Music

General music is required for grades K-6. Each grade comes twice a week, either to Ms. Alipanah's room or Mrs. Websters’ room. K-2 has music for 30 minutes and 3-6 has music for 40 minutes. In our classes we strive to teach music literacy through playing a variety of singing games, playing the recorder (3-6 grades only) and playing lots of different instruments. We also work on our singing voices. Learning how to sing on pitch is very important, especially for K and 1st grade because once they have mastered this they will never lose it! Learning about different composers and listening to different styles of music is also important in our curriculum because our students should be exposed to all kinds of music. We have a lot of fun and we hope your children are coming home with lots of different songs to sing for you!

Chorus

Chorus is offered for grades 4-6. Chorus is another way to expand students’ music literacy, work on proper singing etiquette and learn a wide variety of repertoire. We usually have one concert in the winter and one in the spring. Sometimes we have other performances throughout the year, so be sure to check your student's FCPS-27 Blackboard account for more details!

The “3 Bees”:

• Be Safe

• Be Thoughtful

• Be a Good Musician

These are the music room’s universal rules, but this year all 1-6 grade classes came up with their own guidelines to follow as well. Since each class is different it was important for them to think of guidelines that worked for their particular class.

Consequences for Behavior:

• Warning

• Sit out from activity; fill out “behavior self-check” form (grades 2-6 only)

• Letter home to parent/guardian that must be signed and returned

• Principal’s office
