The David L. Readyhough Library at Bush Hill Elementary School
In April 2005 the Bush Hill library was named by the School Board in memory of David Readyhough, former principal, in recognition of his love of children, his commitment to their education and love of reading, and his tireless devotion to the school staff and community.

In a welcoming environnment which encourages students to be comfortable and confident in any library, our mission is to:
• Develop information literate students
• Promote a love of reading
• Inspire lifelong learning
• Collaborate to help teachers teach
|
|
Library Policies:
• Students in grades K-2 have a weekly 30 minute lesson and book checkout.
• Students in grades 3-6 have a flexible schedule, with classes scheduled when appropriate for book discussions, curriculum enhancements, and reference and research lessons.
•All students are encouraged to check out books any time. Students in Kindergarten may have one book checked out at a time; students in grades 1-2 may have two books checked out at a time; students in grades 3-4 may have three books checked out at a time. Students in grades 5-6 have unlimited checkout privileges as long as none of their books are overdue. Books are due when the student has finished with them; however, if the student needs a book for longer than two weeks, he or she should bring it to the library for renewal to avoid receiving an overdue notice.
• Students are welcome to research independently during school hours with permission from their teachers. |
Virginia Readers’ Choice
Each year, Bush Hill students participate in the Virginia Readers’ Choice program, which spotlights 10 good books, published within the past five years in several age categories. Students in grades K-2 hear the Primary selections during their regular library classes. The library owns multiple copies of both the Elementary and Middle School selections so older students have an opportunity to read them throughout the year. Parent/student discussions also take place at least five times a year. Students who have read or heard four or more books in a category are eligible to vote for their favorite in late March. Bush Hill student favorites from the 2008-2009 books were Once I Ate A Pie (Primary), Henry's Freedom Box (Elementary), and Airborn and Hattie Big Sky (Middle School tie.) It is always interesting for the students to see whether their favorites win at the state level. For more information about the selections, please visit the Readers'Choice website.

Book Fairs
In order to encourage reading and give our families the opportunity to purchase books for their home libraries, as well as provide financial support for our library and school, Bush Hill sponsors Scholastic book fairs in the Fall and in the Spring each year. The theme of our next book fair, which will take place from October 19-23, is Destination Book Fair - Read Around the World!
