ESOL Students Engage in Many Activities to Support their Reading, Oral Communication, and Writing Skills
ESOL students are exposed to books daily. Books are selected based upon level, vocabulary, content, illustrations, and interest of the student.
This student is reading a story independently. Before reading, the teacher introduced the story and reviewed unfamiliar vocabulary. The teacher also reviewed and introduced strategies to use when encountering an unknown word.
This student is practicing reading by rereading books found in his reading bag. Rereading familiar books allows ESOL students to develop and practice reading fluently.
This student is creating his own story by filling in omitted text. He is using another story to help him. Once the story is complete, he will take his story home to share with his family.
Students practice oral communication skills through a variety of activities such as retelling a story. In this picture, a student is retelling a story with characters and a setting she created. When a retelling occurs without the aid of a text, reading comprehension skills are also involved. |
Writing can be very challenging for an ESOL student. To support students’ writing abilities, many resources such as word cards, picture dictionaries, and sentence starters are available. |
This student is creating sentences that contain words with the letter P. In this picture, the student is using a sentence starter and word card to help him. Even though he is not responsible for spelling the words on his own, at this time, he is still practicing many necessary skills required for writing such as: writing left to right, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation.

On occasion, math and other content areas are integrated with students' reading, writing, and oral communication instruction. |
