Each student at Burke School will receive a Student Responsibilities and Rights booklet, Regulation 2601.18P. Once the booklets are distributed, the teacher must make sure that each student signs for his/her booklet and takes the booklet home to be reviewed with the parent. The parent shall sign the Parent Signature Sheet and return to school before a locker will be issued for the student. By the end of the second week of school each semester, the CRTs will complete a thorough review of the SR&R with each student. This countywide regulation defines students' responsibilities for proper behavior as well as their right to be educated in a safe environment. We adhere to the Rules of Conduct as outlined in Chapter II.
Student Dress Code
Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of safety, and good taste. No clothing with language that is vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene, or that promotes or depicts weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, drug paraphernalia, violence, or gang symbols may be worn. No head dress of any kind is allowed in buildings during school hours, except for religious purposes. Students who wear clothing that does not meet these requirements will be asked to change clothes and will not be able to return to classes until the student has changed into appropriate attire.
Attendance
When a student is absent, please do one of the following:
- Call our Student Absence Line (available 24 hours/day)
- Call the Office (7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. weekdays)
Provide a signed note if your student:
- will not be riding the bus home
- will be out for all/part of the day
- someone other than parent/guardian will be picking the student up
Students who do not ride the bus into or home from school, need to be signed in/out in the Office .
For a student who wants to ride the bus home with another Burke student, both students must bring signed notes from a parent/guardian (these are verified with phone calls) .
Unless we hear from a parent/guardian, absences are considered unexcused. In most cases, if a student misses the bus, the absence or tardy will be marked as unexcused. Truancy is a problem for some students and it is important that we hold them accountable.
On rare occasions students have legitimate reasons for missing the bus. When that happens, we will excuse the tardy/absence. Once a student accumulates a total of five unexcused absences, we will make a referral to the attendance officer. This is not intended as a punitive measure; instead, it's meant to be an added resource for staff, students, and parents. Regular school attendance is required for all students and it is imperative for appropriate learning opportunities.
