Welcome to the third grade Bull Run website! The third grade staff includes: Mrs. Flowers, Mrs. Heffley, Mrs. Seymour, and Mrs. Waller. Our GT center teachers are Ms. Lieb and Mrs. Napier. Ms. Waigand is our resource teacher, and our Instructional Assistants are Barbara Campbell, Nora Farrell, and Jaya Singh. We look forward to a rewarding, successful, and exciting year with your children. Third grade is a year of tremendous growth and change for all students. We have a challenging curriculum and many events planned for everyone. Our language arts program will focus on guided reading and word study. Students will participate in reading and writing workshops and work toward earning their “Cursive License” at the end of the year. Flexible grouping will be used in math to meet the individual needs of each child, and students will, probably have each general education teacher at some point throughout the year. Our focus will be on multiplication and division fact families, fractions, and decimals. Please practice, practice, practice the multiplication facts with your child. Our social studies curriculum takes us around the world studying the ancient civilizations of Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. We’ll learn about the contributions of each society including how and where democracy originated. A special day is planned to celebrate the Chinese New Year with arts and crafts, games, and a Chinese luncheon. Our economics unit will include “Bull Bucks” and will culminate with the much anticipated Market Day. Science is a hands-on program including units on Mystery Powders, Our Changing Earth, Rocks, Minerals, and Soils, and Butterflies. Your child will maintain interactive notebooks and folders throughout the year to organize their information. We’ll be visiting Camp Hemlock in May to participate in a fun filled day of activities designed to review and reinforce concepts learned in Our Changing Earth and Rocks, Minerals, and Soil units. Be sure to ask your child about the Butterfly unit. We’ll be studying their life cycles and watching them change from caterpillars into butterflies and finally releasing them into our butterfly garden. It’s sure to be one of our favorite units. We will begin reviewing for the SOLs in March. The tests are scheduled for the beginning of June. Please visit the website regularly. If you have questions or concerns throughout the year, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Again, we look forward to a great year. Thank you,
