Welcome to our Fourth Grade Website!

Welcome to 4th grade! We are so excited to take this learning journey with your child and you! There are a lot of firsts in 4th grade, a lot of learning to do, and a lot of fun to be had. We ask that you keep in contact with your child’s teacher and join us on this incredible journey!

Fourth grade is a year of a lot of maturing and undertaking more responsibility. We use student agendas in 4th grade. We encourage you to help your child use their agenda to help keep themselves organized and apprised of upcoming projects and homework assignments. Please help them be successful in implementing this great organizational tool.

We will be reading and writing in many different genres. Students will be practicing their comprehension strategies and diving into good literature. You can help most by being sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes every day. And…they are not too old for you to read to them!

Mathematics will continue building on what they have previously learned. We will be continuing with more complex multiplication and fractions. Students will also be learning long division. Throw in a little geometry, algebra, decimals, and word problems and you’ve got the 4th grade math curriculum. Students will be working in small groups, with manipulatives, and interacting in lessons on the SMART Board.

Virginia Studies is the focus for 4th grade social studies. We will be learning all about the geography and early people of Virginia. The American Revolution and Civil War will also be explored. We will also learn about Virginia’s industries, government, and growth in the 20th century.

Science is always an exciting curriculum for students. They will get a chance to do hands-on experiments in magnetism & electricity, weather, force & motion, and ecosystems. We will also continue to learn more about the planets and outer space.
We will have many opportunities for learning “off campus” as well. We will be going to Jamestown and Williamsburg (our biggest trip of the year). We will also get to go to the Kennedy Center for a day of music and the National Mall for some historical exploration.

This year your child will get the incredible opportunity to be a part of the Strings program. There is a strong correlation between classical music and mathematical thinking. We encourage children to stretch themselves into realms they may not have previously explored or to dive into areas of interest. Your child will also have the opportunity to run for an SCA office at the end of this year.

We are excited to see the growth we know your children are going to make this year. We are also looking forward to all the learning your children will help us do! Again, remember to keep in touch with your child’s teacher. Please never hesitate to contact any one of us with questions or concerns.

Here’s to a fantastic year and un-BULL-ievable growth!

Sincerely,
The 4th Grade Team
