Our SUM teachers are so busy the only way to catch their portraits was on our special celebration days.

Above Ms. Sampson celebrates with us on Hippy Day
A welcome addition to our faculty for the 2002/2003 school year. Above Mrs. Gates helps with AIMS DAYS. Unfortunately Mrs. Gates is not with us this year. We miss her.
Here Mrs. Lucas is showing us just how whacky she can be!

Bucknell is so lucky to have not one but two excellent Step Up Math (SUM) teachers on board. As a result, with two classes per grade level and a one-hour math block, it's possible to have at least two teachers in every classroom for math . They plan lessons and schedule time with the classroom teachers helping with whole or small group instruction.

SUM is a Title I program. Bucky will direct you to the Fairfax County page with more information on SUM and other Title I programs.

About the Teachers

Several teachers went to Everyday Counts, Calendar Math training to learn how to link daily routines with math skills such as patterns, accumulations of time and money, and number concepts.

Lois Lucas, Elizabeth Sampson, and a combined group (Dorothy Klieber, Tanya Ramseur and Gina Constantine) presented at the National Council of Mathematics Teachers Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, where the national standards for mathematics instruction are shared and discussed. Workshops and presentations included ways to teach various math topics Pre-K through college and forums for discussing challenges impacting curriculum and assessment. Teachers also have an opportunity to preview the newest math instructional materials and meet the authors
.

About the Students

Evidence of math instruction can be seen all over the building. One might be walking down the hall and see a group of students measuring with a meter stick or a meter wheel. Another group might be mapping out various triangles with masking tape. Peek into a classroom and watch students having fun learning with manipulatives.

Balancing the scales while balancing our lives.
Is it a cube or an optical illusion?

In addition Ms. Sampson and Mrs. Lucas are the energy behind several other Math programs at the school. In November 2001 David Schwartz, author of many math books, presented workshops for teachers and students during the school day and then did a workshop for the parents in the evening.

A highlight of the 2002/03 school year was the collaboration of the Math and Science Committees to initiate what we call AIMS DAYS, activities integrating math and science. Two sessions were held, one in December and one in March. The students were treated to a day of fun and learning.

A workshop with M. Neagoy was arranged in May, 2003. She is a national mathematics consultant and the head judge for MATHCOUNTS organization. Since 1985, she has worked with teachers independently and through Georgetown University. She spoke to Bucknell teachers about number sense and problem solving Wed. May 14 and then came back on Friday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 20, to do classroom lessons. She incorporated manipulative materials and math games with problem solving activities.
