West Potomac JROTC members participated in an initiative to help Bucknell's sixth grade students prepare for the social studies SOL test. During the third quarter, once a week our students arrived at school early ... 8:00 am ...and were met by the West Potomac students. Four game type activities were developed with questions from the current materials given by Central Office in the History/Social Studies area. A two and a half week period of time was given for all children to master the material and then a new set of questions was introduced and used in the games.
The JROTC students initially worked with a staff representative and the School Based Technology Specialist in order to understand the games and how to work with the students. Eventually the high school students were given the responsibility of running the groups with the supervision of the faculty members.
The program turned out to be a very enjoyable learning experience for all involved. Hopefully our Social Studies SOL scores will reflect the time and effort put into this partnership.
