INFORMATION Bryant Adult Alternative High School predominantly serves students from Area I of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) system. Area I is bordered on the north by Alexandria, Virginia, on the south by the Occoquan River, on the east by the Potomac River, and on the west by Burke, Virginia. A diverse population of more than 45,000 students is enrolled in the Area I schools. Of the three administrative areas, Area I has the largest percentage of minority students (41 percent). With the exception of those students enrolled in specialized programs, Bryant's students reside in Area I.Bryant has both day and evening programs. Landmark Career Academy (LCA) is a Bryant satellite at Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Virginia. The LCA is a cooperative effort between Landmark Mall, TRAC/ USA, and Fairfax County Public Schools. This program, with 27 students, provides an opportunity for nontraditional learners to complete a high school diploma through an individualized, self-paced, school-to-work program. The work-based environment emphasizes developing employment skills and opportunities in retailing, hospitality, travel and tourism, financial services, and office skills. Bryants enrollment since its inception in 1986 has grown dramatically, in part due to the publics awareness and recognition of an increasing need for alternative education. Project Opportunity, a program for pregnant and parenting teens, began at Bryant in 1987 with a grant from the Virginia Department of Education under the Carl Perkins Act. It has grown from 38 students in 1986 to 100 students in 2000. The ESL population has also increased substantially from 4 in 1987 to 135 in 2000. Of the 100 Project Opportunity students, about 15 are also in ESL classes. To help students achieve their goal of graduating, their performance is assessed on their first day. Every student who enrolls in the Bryant Adult Alternative High School day school program completes a full-day orientation session. During this orientation, each student completes a Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) Test, a math achievement test, a writing sample, and a learning styles inventory. Bryant Adult Alternative High School faculty and staff create a supportive learning environment. Small class sizes allow teachers to focus on individual strengths and needs. The program promotes the development of academic, personal, and career skills so that these students can contribute responsibly to the community as reliable citizens, capable workers, and effective family members and parents. Instruction is frequently individualized for each student to meet his/her specific needs. Academics
