Morning News Teams
The morning news and announcements are broadcast each morning over closed circuit TV Channel BEST. Teams from each of the fifth grades learn to operate the camera, microphone, and tape machine while two team members present the news live in front of the camera. Short varied spots are shown at the end of most morning programs intended to enrich, review, extend, and introduce curriculum topics taught throughout the year using various technologies.
Safety Patrols
Responsible fourth and fifth grade students are selected to serve as Braddock's safety patrols. They are instrumental in the smooth transition of students as they arrive and depart from school. These students play a very important role in the school community, and serve as role models for their peers.
Student Council Association
The student council is an executive group which can be described as the "heart and soul" of the school. Its membership includes all students in the school, the classroom representatives, the S.C.A. elected officers, the committee chairpersons, the faculty sponsors, and the principal. At the meetings, discussions are held to generate new activities for the school. Special events throughout the school year are sponsored by the S.C.A. for school wide participation.
General Music
The General Music program at Braddock Elementary School adheres to the Fairfax County Music Program of Studies which is organized by four related strands: Perform, Create, Investigate and Connect.

Perform: Students sing, play instruments, and move to music.
Create: Students explore individual vocal and instrumental improvisation.
Investigate: Students study and practice music theory through music reading, notation, and sight-reading.
Connect: Students discover and relate music to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, history, foreign languages, art, and physical education.

Rosalyn Crews and Kristi Shultz, General Music Teachers

Chorus
Braddock Elementary fourth and fifth grade students are provided the opportunity to join the chorus. Students are taught vocal warm-up exercises, beginning to advanced sight-singing skills, performance techniques, and are introduced to a variety of songs that are not only enjoyable and age appropriate, but expand their vocal abilities as well. Students perform in both the winter and spring concerts and are enriched by the experience this ensemble fosters.
Band
In Fairfax County Public Schools students are allowed to join Band in the 5th grade. At Braddock all of the 5th grade classes attend a Band demonstration assembly during the first week of school. Ms. Kelly, the Band Director, introduces the students to the instruments that they may choose to play: flute, clarinet, sax (all woodwinds); trumpet, trombone, baritone (all brass instruments); and percussion (snare drum, bass drum, cymbal, tambourine, triangle, bells).

Each student has a group lesson once a week. At the end of the year the students perform in their first concert, usually in May or June. They play many different kinds of music including marches, popular tunes, movie themes, rock songs, and of course, “Let’s Go Band!” It is exciting to learn to play a Band instrument, and, as some students have said, “It’s fun to be in the Band!”

Strings
Braddock Elementary School children in 4th and 5th grades, have the opportunity to join our strings program. The strings program offers free 45 minute lessons once a week, to students interested in studying violin, viola, cello, or bass. Over the past 2 years, students have participated in Solo/Ensemble Festival and have received Outstanding ratings. Many students have also combined with other elementary schools to form The Stuart/Annandale Area Orchestra. The area orchestra has participated in District X Orchestra Festival and has received Outstanding ratings for the past 2 years. Currently, our strings program is 83 students strong. Students at Braddock are serious about their musical studies. If you have an interest in joining our strings program, all 4th and 5th grade students are welcome! Joining strings is making a commitment to practicing a stringed instrument every day! If your child would like to be a part of our program, registration is at the beginning of every school year. We look forward to another musically productive year, and hope to see you at our Spring concert!

Musically Yours,
Valerie Weintraut, Braddock Elementary strings teacher
