A Message from the Art Room: Miss Jones

This year in Art Club I directed Art Clubbers through the process of creating a mural.  Students learned about the significance of painting a mural directly onto school walls, brainstormed good ideas based upon the space in the gym that we were able to use, sketched designs that would be appropriate for each wall, primed the walls, transferred the designs onto the walls, painted the walls, and reflected on the experience.  When you have a moment, please stop by the gym and check out the murals that several 5th and 6th grade students have stayed after school since October to create.  I am very proud of their achievement of creating Bonnie Brae’s first permanent mural!

For now, please read the following artist statements to get to know each team of students and their ideas behind their mural designs:

Team 1:
We are team one and we are all 5th and 6th grade girls.  Whether we like sculpting, painting or drawing, we are all artists.  The girls in team one are Shian D., Sarah H., Annie T., Alyssa W., Victoria L., Hayley C., Kelly C., Jina L., Jessica T., Nicole M., and Stephanie J.

We painted the wall that is closest to the doors as you enter the gym.  Our inspiration for our mural is P.E. because we do athletic events in the gym.  The horse represents speed and strength, and with effort, we are able to beat the toughest competition.  Since the horse represents our rival, we chose the Scottie dog to represent our school because it is our school’s mascot.

Team 2:
We are team two and we are Austin M., Riley M., Anne S., Zach J., and Walter C.  We wanted to do art club to become better artists, to learn, and to have fun.  Some of us wanted to get better at art and some of us loved to do art outside of school and in our free time.  We want to grow to be better artists.

The wall space was challenging because it was cramped and small.  We did our mural around the water fountains, which was fun and hard at the same time.  Our area was very challenging.

We have Michael Phelps (in dog form), a plumber (dog) and pipes “connected” to the water fountains.  Our mural is based on a water theme.  We also have people/dogs swimming in the water with bathing suits and inner tubes.

Our mural has a water theme because it’s around the water fountain and to represent water sports.  We chose to include a dog version of Michael Phelps because he won 13 gold medals this year at the summer Olympics and he is a role model for many people.

Team 3:
We are team three.  Our team consists of Claudia V., Nicole H., Jane Y., Chris C., Adam J., and Alex B.  Our art background is that we all love to draw.  One of us actually oil paints.  Our mural is on the larger wall, and it is the one stating our school’s motto.  The mural shows a cloud that is supposed to be like a dream coming from a person in their room.  The person is dreaming of how Bonnie Brae is a great school.  The room has many colors and is bright.  The main meaning of our mural is to show how much school spirit we have.  The motto in the cloud represents our school and how much we love it.  The challenges we had while creating our mural were painting around the windows, ceiling and bulletin board.  It was also challenging to mix the best colors to use for our mural to make it stand out.  We included the sports equipment at the bottom of our mural because we are lucky to have such great P.E. and because the mural is inside the gym.
