There are three teachers of English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL) at Beech Tree Elementary School.
Lynn Quinn– Team Leader
ESOL instruction is accomplished through pull-out or inclusion approaches depending on the students' needs. Our teaching focus is language arts. In pull-out programs we work with students in the ESOL classroom to reinforce their grade-level content and to present the materials in an engaging, context-rich manner. As resource and inclusion teachers we go into the regular education classroom to co-teach with the grade level teacher. In an inclusion setting, we often work with the ESOL students in small, cooperative learning groups.
The method is to teach content through immersion in
English. We incorporate the use of technology, hands-on learning
activities, collaborative work groups, and a thematic unit approach
which reinforces the curriculum. These strategies stimulate
subject area learning and English language acquisition.
Students are eligible for ESOL support based on their oral,
writing, and reading abilities in English. Students in the ESOL
program are monitored and tested on a regular basis. The ESOL
teachers work closely with the grade-level teachers to ensure
consistent and appropriate support is provided to the ESOL students.
If you have any questions about the ESOL program or special concerns regarding your student, please do not hesitate to contact the ESOL or grade-level teacher.
