Math

The primary math program at Bailey’s is Everyday Math which focuses on a spiral method of learning mathematics where topics are introduced and revisited multiple times throughout the year. Teachers using Everyday Math, which includes computer software games, build on students’ intuitive knowledge to help them gain an understanding of the abstract and symbolic.  The Everyday Math program supports the philosophy of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI).  CGI is based upon two learning theories:  (1) primary school children have an intuitive knowledge of mathematics and (2) math instruction should be based on the relationship between skills and problem solving.1

Two boys, manipulativesThe Mathematics Lab at Bailey’s is a magnificent resource for teachers, students and parents. There are numerous manipulatives, tools, and collections that students can get their hands on to make meaning out of the mathematics they are learning. The classroom teachers collaborate with the two Title I Mathematics resource teachers to encourage and support students to become high level thinkers, problem solvers and mathematicians. girl #2, manipulatives

Throughout the 2006 – 2007 school year, Lucy West, educator and author of Content-Focused Coaching, will work with Bailey’s and other Cluster III Title I teachers to facilitate the re-design of standards-based lessons.  Ms. West will challenge teachers to deeply question their learning outcome goals and to analyze how their instruction supports student learning.  Bailey’s is pleased to be the host of this professional development series.  Bailey’s was selected because of the strong collaborative environment that exists among Bailey’s teachers.

In combining all of these wonderful resources and professional development opportunities, teachers are able to focus on meeting students where they are and pushing them forward.
