Music

Annandale Terrace values the fine arts as part of a well-rounded education. All of our students receive music instruction and we encourage all students to participate in one or more of our performing ensembles.

All students in grades K-5 participate in general music classes. K-3 students receive 30 minutes of instruction twice a week and students in grade 4-5 have 45 minutes twice a week. General music classes develop their musical abilities in a variety of ways.

As stated in the Fairfax County Program of Studies in music, all children participating in musical activities will:

1. Develop a positive self-image through awareness of the body and its relationships to space by moving, singing, and playing instruments.

2. Communicate ideas, feelings, and emotions through improvisation.

3. Increase, through listening activities, awareness and discrimination of sounds, auditory memory and sequencing, and ability to respond to the coordination of sounds.

4. Gain interpersonal skills by participating in instrumental ensembles and group activities in movement, improvisation, and singing.

5. Develop aesthetic sensitivity and appreciation through listening and improvisation.

6. Read and symbolize music.
