Confidence in Technology

Annandale Terrace is a place where teachers and students trust technology. Most importantly, all computers run on the same operating system (Windows XP) and all our computers have the latest educational software configured in the same way. This allows teachers and students to have the same user experience when they are working in the lab or walk across the building and login on a laptop in their classroom. Having all the buttons and icons do the same thing on all the computers, lets students focus on the lesson and not on figuring out a new operating system every time they sit at a computer.

We have one of the county's most robust wireless networks allowing students to work directly on the server. Files follow the students around the building. When they sit down at a computer, all their files are available just as they left them -- no mater what computer the student used before. Nothing gets lost.

All Information is Safe and Always Available: Secure, Highly Redundant and Modular.

"Safe and Secure" means our student and teacher generated information is protected from outsiders, and our students are protected from internet content they shouldn't see. FCPS employs some of the most advanced firewall, virus and internet filtering technology available.

“Highly Redundant” means, nothing gets lost. All information is backed up twice a day. Previous versions of all files and folders are available for the prior month and a half for students and teachers to view at the click of a button. In addition, the entire server (with all those backups) is saved once a day to an external media source. As a result, not one file has been lost at Annandale Terrace Elementary since August of 2006.

“Modular” means everything is easily fixed. All our machines are interchangeable. We have created one-file restores of our computers. If any of the software or operating system becomes corrupted we can quickly copy the one-file restore onto the computer and it is up and running immediately for the next class.

Students of all grade levels can use wireless laptops throughout the day.

Our new CLCP computer lab has 30 of the latest desktop computers.

In Head Start, Kindergarten and First Grade we also use the Waterford Early Reading program.

Printers are networked, allowing a choice of immediate print options for students, in case the local class printer is busy or unavailable for any reason.

Focusing on Students
Our teachers are routinely provided professional development, enhancing their technical skills to pass along to the students or employ in lesson plans. Teachers have laptops with 24x7 access to their school files. Even when not connected, teachers can update and change files which are then automatically synchronized with the server at the next available opportunity.

Minimum Technical Standards
Annandale Terrace Elementary has minimum technical standards for our computers: Pentium 4 or greater processors, 512 MB random access memory (RAM) and 40 gigibyte hard drives. These minimum standards will be increased during the 2007-2008 school year to a minimum of one gigibyte of RAM.
