"B" Buddies Melissa Ainsworth and Christine Passut "B" Buddies is an after school club to promote friendships between students with disabilities and students without disabilities. Club activities are dictated by the participants. B Buddies meets once a month on Monday from 2:15 - 3:30 in room 22.
After-School Drama Vicki Farish After-School Drama is organized to allow students to perform or help with drama productions at AHS. Any student may participate by working behind the stage on the production staff. Open auditions for performers are held before each theatrical production. Rehearsals run 4-7 weeks, depending on the size of the production.
Arts & Craft Club Ms. Rosenberg and Ms. Hsia. Meets every Wednesday in room 242.
Black Cultural Awareness Association Ms. Berry The purpose of BCAA is to provide a forum for students of African descent to celebrate a common heritage while providing the opportunity to enhance academic equity and success on all levels. It is the goal of this association to support, encourage, and nurture each other's efforts and gain greater representation in extracurricular and school leadership activities. The association meets monthly and membership is open to all AHS students. Parental membership and participation is also strongly encouraged. Annual dues are ten dollars.
Business Honor Society Mrs.Silberminz The Business Honor society is an organization for students in grade 12 who have taken a total of three credits in Business and Information Technology and have a final GPA in business courses of 3.0 or higher. Sophomores and juniors enrolled in a business class and who have taken two business credits may be probationary members.
Chess Club Mr. J. Cooley The purpose of the Chess Club is to provide students who are interested in chess the opportunity to meet after school and play chess. The club is open to anyone interested in playing chess or learning how to play chess. The club meets every Monday after school in room 233
Color Guard Ms. Buzzell The Annandale Color Guard has established itself as an outstanding performing organization. Its members employ the use of flags, rifles, sabres, and dance. They perform with the marching band throughout the fall and compete in a color guard circuit during the winter months. Membership is open to anyone by audition in the spring. For more information contact their sponsors, Ms. Buzzell, or Mr. Elgin, the band director.
Computer Science Club Mr. Martin The purpose of the Computer Science Club is to explore and examine the different aspects of computer science. Students need to be computer literate.
Debate Team TBA The purpose of the Debate Team is to develop critical thinking and articulate leadership skills. Debate is a competitive Virginia High School League activity and earned letters are awarded at the end of the year. This team is open to all students who are interested in learning to develop and defend a position and who want to improve their public speaking ability. Meetings are Thursdays from 2:15 - 3:00 PM in the library.
East Africa Club Mr. Kelly East Africa Club promotes and celebrates East African culture for all interested in learning more about East African culture.
ESOL Drama Ms. Chekin and Ms. Picard. Meets every Wednesday in room 201A.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Mr. Elgin The purpose of FCA is to equip Christians to be witnesses to their AHS sports teams and to encourage and strengthen their walk with Christ. Anyone interested is welcome. Prayer meetings are Tuesdays before school at 6:55 a.m. in room 333, while the Huddle meetings are held on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m.
Filament Ms. Dion Filament is the literary/art magazine, showcasing the creative talents of AHS students in writing, photography and art. Interest and willingness to devote the necessary time are the only requirements. Meetings are two to four times a month, depending on selection and production deadlines.
Foreign Affairs Club/Model U.N Mr. York The Foreign Affairs Club simulates activities of the United Nations. The purpose is to help build an understanding of international relations work. Students take on the identity of a country and address a wide range of political, social and economic issues. Annandale participates in local conferences and travels to two national conferences a year.
Forensics TBA The Forensics Team allows students to compete in 10 different speaking and dramatic categories. The purpose is to make students better speakers, to allow them to experience a team atmosphere and to bring recognition to their school. Competitions are held once a month.
French Club Ms. Rudney The French Club provides students who are interested in the French language the opportunity to meet socially after school and participate in planned and supervised activities. The club is open to all AHS French students and native speakers of French.
French Honor Society Mr. Kearsley The purpose of the French Honor Society is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to reward high scholastic attainment and to create enthusiasm for an understanding of French culture and civilization. Candidates for membership must be enrolled in a French course beyond the second year, maintain a B+ average in French, and maintain a B average in all other subjects. The society may function as an activity group or as a purely honorary group with no activities. Students may see the sponsor for more detailed eligibility requirements.
Gay/Straight Alliance Ms. Slingerland The GSA is a student-run alliance to foster compassion, acceptance, and tolerance through education. Meetings are held the first and third Mondays of every month in Trailer 6.

Grief Support Group Ms. White, Ms. Burgos, Ms. Jahanian Meets every Wednesday
Hispanic Leadership Club Ms. Carey The HLC is a student-run organization that works to create a more positive image of Hispanic students and that wants to encourage Hispanic students to take active leadership roles in the school and the community. The group meets on Mondays.
International Cultural Club TBA Students meet to discuss and plan ways to increase knowledge of the many countries and cultures represented by AHS students. A mini-project in fall 2006 will help interested ESOL students "connect" to a school activity of their interest. Students will also sponsor fundraising activity, and help plan and publicize Heritage Night '07.
Interact Club Ms. Hedrick and Ms. Schaefer The Interact Club is a service organization, which is the Junior Affiliate of Rotary. It is open to all students interested in community service. Meetings are twice a month in T-4.
"It's Academic" Mrs. Saladino "It's Academic" meets weekly for 1 hour practices to prepare for the televised Channel 4 competition, as well as a variety of H.S. and college competitions throughout the year. Try-outs are held in the fall and are open to anyone.
JV Math Team Ms. McLaughlin The purpose of the JV Math Team is to participate in countywide mathematics competitions held once a month at area high schools. These competitions provide excellent practice for PSAT/NMSQT and SAT preparation. Participation is limited to Algebra I, Geometry, Honors Geometry, Algebra 2, or Honors Algebra 2 students.
Key Club Ms. Adair The Key Club is a service organization, which supports AHS and the surrounding community. The club is supported by the Annandale Kiwanis Club. It is open to all students who desire to help others.
Latin Club Ms. Morgan The Latin Club is designed to expand on activities begun in Latin class and to provide an opportunity for students to have fun with classmates while learning about Roman culture.
Latin Honor Society Ms. Morgan The Latin Honor Society recognizes consistent excellence in the study of Latin. Requirements are a B+ average in Latin,; participation in National Latin Exam, an overall B average, and demonstration of good character and academic integrity. Students are eligible at the end of Latin II, and must meet the requirements each year to remain a member. Seniors wear the purple & white honor cord at graduation.
Math Honor Society Mr. Evans - Mu Alpha Theta is an organization that recognizes mathematics achievement and promotes a continued interest in mathematics. Members must have completed geometry; have a GPA of 3.5 in math and an overall GPA of 3.0. Media Technology Club Dawn Wicklund  
Model Judiciary Mr. Valentino The Model Judiciary features mock-trial competition with other Northern Virginia high schools and appellate argument competitions statewide. Participants develop speaking, organizational and reasoning skills. The team is open to all students interested in public speaking and the legal process.
Muslim Students' Association Ms. Omar The Muslim Students' Association is an organization for all students. The association promotes unity and fellowship for Muslims and also endeavors to make Islamic teaching available to interested non-Muslims at Annandale.
National Art Honor Society Ms. Buzzell Students must have a B+ average in art, submit a portfolio of 3 pieces of artwork or photography, and complete a NAHS application form. Students will work on projects both in and out of school. Meets selected Mondays and Wednesdays in room 146.
National Honor Society Mr. Hickman, Mr. Litwinetz The National Honor Society is a national organization for students in grades 11-12 who have a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Members must also demonstrate leadership, character and service. Students are required to do ten hours of community service each semester
Physics Club Mr. Clarkson A group for students interested in physics who would like to develop their knowledge in aras of practical and theroetical physics real-world applications. Club will meet two times each month.
Quill & Scroll International Honor Society for High School Journalists Mr. Weintraut Will meet on selected dates in the Publications Lab, room 262.

S.A.F.E. Club Ms. Wheeler Students who want to be part of the SAFE (Stopping Aids for Everyone) Club must first complete special training conducted by the Northern Virginia Aids Ministry here on campus in the fall. Participation in training must be by parent permission. This certifies a student as a peer educator and a member of the SAFE Club. Peer educators are trained to share accurate information about HIV, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases, both in terms of prevention and transmission issues. School and community outreach activities are conducted at different times throughout the year.

Spanish Club Ms. Jimenez-Herrera The Spanish Club promotes and enhances language learning through an interactive social setting. The club provides the means for people, who are both native and non-native speakers, to experience, appreciate and participate in the diverse composition of the Hispanic culture. Enrollment or prior enrollment in a Spanish class is encouraged.
Spanish Honor Society Mr. Rivadeneira The Spanish Honor Society recognizes high scholastic achievement in the study of the Spanish language and promotes continuity of interest in the Hispanic studies. New members must have completed 3 semesters of high school Spanish, have a 3.5 GPA in Spanish, 10 hours of community service and have an overall 3.0 GPA. Meetings are held every second Wednesday of every month at 2:10 p.m.
STAND Ms. Feil and Ms. Farrara A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition (Annandale Chapter)-STAND for Conscience works to raise awareness of modern genocide around the world and the history of genocide. The group will begin a campaign to speak out to others about genocide as well as bring in guest speakers, raise money for the troubled areas, (ie Darfur), and host events. Members will visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorail Museum, the Capitol, attend area conferences, and have an opportunity to lobby Congress. The group will meet two-three times monthly.
Student Advisory Council (SAC) Ms. Kahn The role of the four students elected to the Student Advisory Council (SAC) is to represent Annandale High School at the Fairfax County Student Advisory Council cluster meetings. The purpose of the Fairfax County SAC is to act on behalf of the students of FCPS to be advocates for student rights, to improve the educational and environment in FCPS system and to aid in the communication among the students, the school administration, the school board and the community. The four SAC representatives meet with the SAC members in their cluster once a month.
Student Government Association Ms. Kahn The role of the student government is to demonstrate the principles of democratic government and the responsibilities of the individual, thereby developing an appreciation of membership in democracy; to develop good citizenship by giving the students an opportunity to have a part in self-government; to help with the coordination of extra-curricular activities; to bring about a closer relationship between the students, faculty and administration; to encourage the development of school spirit through participation; and to demand the best possible academic atmosphere. In keeping with these stated purposes, the student government plays a major role in helping to plan and coordinate the various student activities within the school. Four officers are elected to the Student Government each year. Those positions are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. These officers are required to take the leadership class.
Technology Students Association (TSA) Mr. Harris The TSA club is an organization which provides students with the opportunity to get involved in Engineering, Electronics, Architecture and other areas of technology. The club competes in an all day regional event and a weekend long state event. Students may compete in many different areas that combine challenge and fun to create an atmosphere that is enjoyable for learning about technology. The club is open to any student interested in technology.
Thespian Society Ms. Farish Thespian Troupe 2589 is an honor society for students who excel in the theatrical arts. The troupe promotes theater knowledge, skills and creativity through various activities, including Class Acts, the winter play, the New York trip and other events. Letters, bars and Thespian awards may be earned.
Cross Bible Study Mr. Hambrick Meet Thursday mornings at 6:50 a.m. in room I-12.
Varsity Math Team Mr. J. Cooley The purpose of the Math Team is to develop and maintain interest in math, to sharpen problem-solving strategies and to increase power and speed in problem solving. Students may participate in nine county-wide competitions. Students must be enrolled in Honors Algebra2/Trig. or above.
Video Production Club Ms. Wicklund This club is open to all students and faculty interested in video production. The club will be learning skills and equipment to create a cable show for the school and videotape school events. Actors, editors, graphic artists, computer techies and interested individuals are welcome. The Video Production Club meets on Wednesday afternoons, 2:15-3:30 in the Library Media Center.
West African Student Union Mr. Boakye Meets the first Wednesday of every month in room 134.
Young Democrats Ms. Richardson The Young Democrats Club is an organization devoted to understanding and discussing public policy and promoting the viewpoints of the Democratic party. Students gain valuable political experience by participating in after-school discussion sessions and working on campaigns.
Young Republicans Mr. Suddarth The purpose of the Young Republicans Club is to acquaint students with the political process, to demonstrate organizational skills and to contribute to the Republican Party in word and deed.

Mr. Elgin

Our bands are well known for their excellence. The marching band has become a pacesetter. This band and the color guard are a welcome attraction at football games and other activities. In addition, our concert, symphonic, and jazz bands continually win honors in local, regional, and national competition. Course offerings include four levels of curricular band and two jazz bands after school. See Mr. Elgin for more information.

Our choruses participate in many activities throughout the year. In addition to singing for school concerts, they perform for community groups and participate at local, regional and state choral festivals, as well as national competitions. Annandale Singers, Concert Choir, Men's Chorale and Women's Ensemble each have a unique repertoire and purpose. See Ms. Dixon for more information about joining or auditioning for a choral group.
DECA (Marketing) Ms. Raynor DECA is a co-curricular, professional organization for high school marketing students. Members participate in marketing activities that support the four areas of the DECA diamond including Leadership Development, Social Intelligence, Civic Consciousness and Vocational Understanding. Program activities are based on the curriculum and include competitions at the District, State and International level. Students must be enrolled in marketing classes.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Ms. Silberminz, Ms. Butler and Ms. Bentley The FBLA is comprised of students who are taking business courses and have an interest in a career in business. FBLA is a co-curricular organization, which develops strong, aggressive business leaders. Members must be enrolled in a business course.

There are three levels of guitar instruction. Beginning - Gives overview of styles, general musicianship. Intermediate - More in-depth study of technique and styles. Advanced - A performing guitar ensemble.

We have three orchestras in our program. The Concert Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble each perform at school and in the community. Qualified students are eligible to participate in many district, regional, state and national events. For more information regarding orchestra, see Mrs. Fitzgerald.

The A-Blast (newspaper)

The student newspaper and Web site www.thea-blast.org provide news, sports, entertainment and feature coverage of the school and broader community. Journalism students write, edit and cover the news in production classes, but new writers, photographers, computer/Web staff and graphic designers are always welcome to join. The staff meets every three weeks in the Publications Lab. See Mr. Weintraut for more information.

The Antenna (yearbook)

The Antenna is the nationally recognized yearbook for AHS. Students will learn publication and design technology to create layouts and photography techniques to showcase Annandale's diverse student body. Photography I and Journalism I are recommended prerequisites, but students may also be enrolled by permission of the sponsor. Staff members enroll in Photojournalism 1, 2, or 3. See Ms. Holmes for more information.
Signal Mr. Weintraut Signal is the video yearbook distributed free to students who buy the Antenna yearbook. Covering highlights from the school year, Signal is entirely produced and edited by students enrolled in IB Film Study and The A-Blast newspaper. See Mr. Weintraut for more information.
