Boys and Girls State

Application Information

Dates and locations: Boys State - June 21st to the 27th at Liberty University, Lynchburg, Virginia Girls State - June 21st to the 27th at Longwood College, Longwood , Virginia

Boys and Girls State applications are to be sent to Mr. Hickman at cliff.hickman@fcps.edu. The deadline has been extended to Friday, January 30, 2009.

PART 1: The Essay

Click on either the Girls or Boys State essay sheet provided and type your essay on that one sheet in no smaller than 12 point font. Answer the following :

What is the individual's role as a citizen and as a leader in today's diverse American Society?

Please note that a copy of your transcript and discipline record will be attached to your essay. Only faculty members will read your essay and review your transcript and discipline record. However, if you are selected, a copy of your essay and activity sheet only will be forwarded to the American Legion sponsors.

PART 2: Girls/Boys State Activity Sheet Instructions

On either the Girls or Boys State Activity Sheet provided list in order all activities, leadership roles, community service/volunteering, activities/sports/summer experience(s), hobbies and interests, and employment in which you have been involved from grades 8 to 11. Twelve (12) point font is recommended. You must place all your information on only one (1) sheet of paper. In all the categories below do not forget to include any awards or honors that you won. Present yourself as if you were applying for college admission or employment. Make this sheet as easy to read as possible.

Leadership

Name the position(s).
Describe your responsibility.
Give the dates you lead and the hours per week.
List any significant accomplishments.

Community Service/Volunteering

Name of the organization, not using acronyms
Year(s) or Month(s) of participation. How many hours per week did you serve.
Describe your duties.
List any recognition(s) that you received.

Activities/Athletics/Summer Experiences

Name the activity. Do not use acronyms.
Give a short description of the activity.
Give the date(s) you participated. Hours per week spent on the activity or sport.
List any achievements or accomplishments.

Before submitting your activity sheet, read it carefully. Have your parents or teachers review it. Ask if the activity sheet gives a full and accurate picture of who you are. And do not forget to save a copy for future use.

Part 3: Senior Year Plan

On one (1) page only answer the question below.

Boys and Girls State will give those students attending knowledge of the American governmental and political system plus leadership skills training. If you are selected to attend Boys or Girls State, how will you use what you learn at Boys or Girls State to improve or influence Annandale High School?
