Chemical Symbols and Formulas

Symbol: A chemical symbol for an element represents one atom of that element when it appears in a formula.

Chemical Formula: A chemical formula is a statement in chemical symbols of the composition of one formula unit of a compound.

A subscript in a formula represents he relative number of atoms of an element in the compound.

Ion: An ion is a charged particle that is formed when an atom gains or loses one or more electrons.

Polyatomic ion: It is a stable charged group of atoms. Ex. (SO₄)^--

Oxidation Number: its oxidation number or charge indicates A combination capacity of an atom or Polyatomic ion.

Chemical compound: In chemical compounds, atoms combine in definite ratios. Their combined charge adds to zero. That is a chemical compound is electrically neutral.

Binary compound: A binary compound is composed of two elements. Its name is the name of positive element followed by the name of the negative element modified to end in -ide.

Some elements have more than one possible oxidation number. A compound containing such an element is named by showing the oxidation number as Roman numerals in parenthesis after the element.

Nomenclature of Compound

A compound containing a Polyatomic ion is named in the same way as a binary compound. However ending of the name of the Polyatomic ion is not changed.

Hydrocarbons are named using a stem that indicates the number of carbon atoms and a suffix indicating how the carbons are linked.

Molecular formula: A molecular formula shows the actual number of each kind of atom in a single molecule of a compound. The molecular formula is always a whole number multiple of the empirical formula.

Empirical formula: An empirical formula represents the simplest whole-number ratio of the elements in the same compound.

A formula unit represents one molecule or the smallest number of particles giving the ratio of the elements in the compound. A coefficient written before a formula indicates the number of formula units of substance.
