Varsity Math Team

The purpose of the Varsity Math Team is to develop and maintain interest in math, to sharpen problem-solving strategies and to increase power and speed in problem solving. Nine competitions or meets are held throughout the school year. All students enrolled in Honors Algebra 2, Trigonometry or higher-level math classes are encouraged to participate. Students gather on designated Wednesday afternoons from 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM in the school cafeteria to take the countywide exam. A typical meet consists of six math questions of varying complexity and type that each student must individually answer within thirty-six minutes. Calculators are not allowed. Usually 50-75 students participate. The scores of the top five students are submitted to the county to represent Annandale High School in the competition. Refreshments are served and math teachers usually give extra credit for attending. Sponsors are Mr. J. Cooley.
