International Baccalaureate Program

What Is IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is an internationally recognized program of studies offered to highly motivated 11th and 12th grade students. This program provides the academic rigor, structure, and experiences for students looking for the highest degree of academic challenge. IB students are challenged to use their education to "create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect." (IBO Mission Statement)

The IB Diploma Program is a two-year program of studies across disciplines with multiple components. After completed the required IB classes and taking the IB exams, students will recieve an IB Diploma in addition to their Virginia high school diploma.

Students who do not want to do the entire IB program also have the option of earning an IB certificates in one or more subjects. Students earn an IB Certificate by completing one or more IB classes and assessments.

IB Diploma Requirements:

·        Successful completion of six IB courses in different subject groups

·        Completion of assessments and external examinations in each group

·        Participation in the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) component

·        Completion of a Theory of Knowledge course

·        The writing and submission of an Extended Essay

The International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland awards an IB Diploma to students who complete all of the above and perform successfully on the six external examinations.  Students at Annandale High School are encouraged to participate in the full diploma program, but may select to take individual IB courses and earn an IB Certificate for those courses.

Preparation for IB Diploma Program

Annandale High School, in partnership with Holmes and Poe Middle Schools offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP) to all students in grades six through ten. Within the MYP at Annandale, honors classes are available for highly motivated 9th and 10th grade students in the four core subject areas. These honors and pre-IB classes are designed to prepare students for the challenge of the IB Program in the 11th and 12th grades. These courses provide the academic rigor, structure and experiences for students preparing to participate in the IB program during junior and senior years.

Important things to remember about 9th and 10th grade:

·        Students are not expected to take all 4 of the Pre-IB classes

·        Students should “mix and match” among program offerings to create a schedule which best meets their needs based on their abilities, interests and goals.

·        Don’t forget that moving to high school is a big step—allow time for students to adjust.

·        Think about extracurricular activities and other commitments

·        You don’t have to “do it all” to get into a good college
