Quilt Project |
Quilting is an American Heritage art. Quilting is rooted in the geometry of design and the mathematics of filling up an area. This is known as tiling or tessellating. The purpose of PROJECT QUILT is to develop an understanding and appreciation of geometry and tiling as they relate to the art of quilting. It will be worth 100 points which will be converted to a letter grade based on the four point scale and will count as five homework grades. Requirements: 1. Statement of participation: You are expected to work on this project with one significant adult in your life (parent, grandparent, guardian, etc.). They must sign and date a statement of participation in this project indicating the number of hours worked along with comments. (5 points) 2. The designs are to be your own creation--the attached samples are NOT to be copied. You must create one 4-patch and one 9-patch template. The samples must be COLORED to create an interesting design. Be sure to use a straight edge and do them NEATLY! (30 points--15 for each template) 3. Area calculations and symmetry: Calculate the area of all geometric figures in your templates. Be sure to show that the sum of the areas of all your figures equals the area of the whole template -i.e. 64 sq. in. and 8l sq. in. Also describe any symmetry including line and rotational (15 points) #2 & #3 are DUE: ______________ 4. Family block: After your templates have been graded, select one of your templates to be your family block. Assemble your family block on material that can be displayed according to the following parameters: (35 points) Assembly: Cut and paste is adequate; iron on material is fine. Do not use straight pins.
